Chocolate Bird Nests
Two things I’ve heard before, but recently read again are stuck in my head:
“Usually the hard thing in parenting is the right thing.”
And, “There are two things we should give our children; one is roots and the other is wings.”
Every day I struggle with parental doubt, and frequently ask myself, “Do I expect too much?” Or, “Am I too strict?” And, “I am doing the right thing?”
The other day my son made a bad choice. I don’t want to embarrass him, so that’s all I’ll say. Love & Logic is a great parenting resource. I’ve followed their advice since my son was a toddler. They encourage natural consequences and accountability, so I leaned on that knowledge while trying to navigate the situation.
It. Was. Hard. He asked something of me and I said, “No, your choice got you into this mess, you need to find your way out of it.” I was there to empathize with him, but not to solve the problem for him.
One of the most difficult things about parenting is that I sometimes look at incidents like an item on a check list. It’s done, check it off the list, moving on, relief. But unfortunately, lessons aren’t always learned that easily or quickly. And things I thought I’d never have to deal with again, happen again, and again.
I often feel so inadequate because parenting requires so much consistency, patience, grace, forgiveness, and understanding. I close every day feeling like I am falling short.
To keep a healthy state of mind, I remind myself often that I am still a work in progress too, and that adults are really no different than kids. Actually, kids are way better. They are so much cooler than we are and they are far more forgiving! But, I too, am still making the same mistakes, and yet God is still patiently working with me.
My husband & I pray together every day. At the top of our list is our parenting. We try so hard to do everything out of love, including discipline, but we have room for improvement. It is our prayer that God makes up for our shortcomings.
