A homemade easy to make, delicious kid-friendly granola bar that compliments picnics or packed lunches!
Whether we care to admit it or not, there is a direct correlation between the things our kids watch and read and their behavior. For that reason, we keep a cautious eye on the things our son puts into his mind. I am especially protective, sometimes a little too much. But I want him to learn how to make good choices for himself, so I’ve been letting go a little. I prefer to let him experience natural consequences, but that’s harder to do when it’s something he watches or reads.
He had been begging me to buy two books of a series he saw at Target. I skimmed through the books and thought they were silly, but couldn’t find any other reason not to get them so I decided to approve the purchase. He read both in the same day!
As he was reading the books he was telling me some of the things he had read, which sparked my curiosity. Later that day I took a closer look at them and they were crude! As the day went on and through the next morning he was sassy, rude, difficult, and talked back. I knew this unpleasant change in behavior meant the books had to be returned.
But I was conflicted. Part of me wanted to just let it go and let him keep the books because I don’t want him to think that by telling me what he read meant he had to return them. I want him to know that he can always tell me anything. I don’t want him to think he’ll get a negative reaction out of me every time he tells me something I don’t approve of.
The other part of me wanted to return the books and explain to him that we become what we watch and read; just like we are what we eat. I had some serious internal warfare over these ridiculous books!
I came to the conclusion that I was overthinking it. I decided I would pray about it, tell my son about the decision to return the books, offer an appropriate replacement for them, and admit my mistake in letting him get them. And that’s exactly what I did!
He was totally fine with returning them. I’m not sure if it’s because he knew it was coming or if it’s because he already read them, though! HA! I was relieved. That night he was thorough with his chores, pleasant and respectful, and looked for ways to help.
Parenting is not an easy gig. It’s easy to overthink everything and then end up doing nothing because I can’t settle on what’s the right thing. I have found that praying is the only solution – it’s my compass when I feel lost!
