A cute way to say ‘Happy Valentine’s Day!’ These adorable cookies are sure to swoon all ages of people in your life!
Love Bug Cookies
My parents divorced when I was 6 years old. At the time it seemed devastating, but it turned out to be a life saving blessing in disguise! We got the very best Dad in the whole wide world. God knew what he was doing when he hand picked him for us! It’s a reminder that God doesn’t promise us an easy life. But what He does promise is that He will fight for us – we only have to be still, have faith, and trust in Him. He promises to give us strength and never leave us!
As my Mom was weathering the storm of divorce, she was intentional about making sure that my sister and I knew we were loved. She balanced work and life with the help of a babysitter, but instead of the babysitter making us meals my Mom would have them in the refrigerator ready for us with little love notes on them! Those small gestures of love make the biggest impact!
Valentine’s Day doesn’t have to be lavish. Recognition of the day can be as small as a Love Bug Oreo Cookie! If you love this idea, then you’ll like these Heart Shaped Valentine’s Day Pop Tarts, Cupid’s Crunch Chex Mix, Valentine Puppy Chow, and Valentine Peanut Butter Cookie Cups, too!
What You’ll Need:
- 24 Oreos
- 1 bag Red Chocolate Melts
- Valentine Sprinkles
- 48 Candy Eyes
- 1 tbsp White Chocolate Chips
How to Make Love Bug Oreo Cookies
- Cover a baking sheet with parchment paper and set aside.
- Melt a half bag of red chocolate melts in a microwave safe bowl. Start by melting for 30 seconds, remove from microwave and stir. Place back in the microwave for additional 30 seconds and stir. Repeat until the red chocolate is completely melted and smooth.
- Dunk an Oreo halfway into the melted red chocolate. While dunking, roll the Oreo back and forth a little so the melted red chocolate comes up on the sides slightly. This gives the cookie the look of a lady bug!
- Place Oreo on parchment paper and sprinkle the melted red chocolate with Valentine sprinkles.
- Repeat these steps until you’ve reached the desired number of cookies.
- Melt a handful of white chocolate chips. This will be the ‘glue’ for the candy eyes.
- Dunk a toothpick in the melted white chocolate chips and dab it on the back of a candy eye. Place eye onto the love bug. Repeat to give each of your love bugs a set of eyes.
- Let cookies sit to harden before removing from the parchment paper.
Recipe Notes:
- Glue – Using white chocolate as the ‘glue’ for the candy eyes helps make it discrete. If you use any other color, it stands out and takes away from the clean look of the candy eyes.
- Red Chocolate – I recommend using a half bag of red chocolate to start with because as you dunk the Oreos little tiny black specks from the cookie are left in the melted chocolate. The more cookies you dunk, the more tiny specks accumulate and it starts to look a little messy. At that point, just discard the melted red chocolate and start fresh with a clean bowl by melting the remaining red chocolate in the bag.
- Red Melting Chocolate – It’s best to use red melting chocolates for this project. You can find them at just about any craft store like Hobby Lobby or Michael’s. You can also find them at Walmart. Typically grocery stores do not carry colored melting chocolate. But, if you can’t find red melting chocolate you can use white chocolate and color it red with food coloring.
- Dunking – When dunking the Oreo in the melted red chocolate, roll the cookie back and forth a little so the chocolate comes up on the sides slightly. This gives the cookies the ‘lady bug’ look!
- Oreos – I recommend using Double Stuffed Oreos, they are thicker. And, I feel like it’s a great excuse to get the Double Stuffed Oreos!
