Homemade Deep Fried Apple Fritters
My favorite donut is an Apple Fritter. I’ve always thought that making them myself would be impossible until one day I decided to see just how impossible it would be. Turns out they were really easy to make and tasted amazing!
Cold or rainy days are baking days for me. I can’t help but feel compelled to make the house smell like a bakery! If you love that smell too, then you’d love making Cinnamon Roll Peach Cobbler or Cinnabon Cinnamon Roll Cake!
What You’ll Need for the Fritters:
- 1 1/2 cups Flour
- 1/4 cup Sugar
- 2 tsp Baking Powder
- 1/2 tsp Salt
- 1 1/2 tsp Cinnamon
- 1/3 cup Milk
- 2 Eggs
- 3 tbsp Applesauce
- 2 Granny Smith Apples (Peeled, Cored & Diced)
- Canola Oil for Frying
And for the Glaze:
- 2 cups Powdered Sugar
- 1/4 cup Milk
- 1/2 tsp Vanilla
How to Make Apple Fritters
- Combine 1 1/2 cups flour, 1/4 cup sugar, 2 tsp baking powder, 1/2 tsp salt, and 1 1/2 tsp cinnamon in a medium bowl. Add 1/3 cup milk, 2 eggs, and 3 tbsp applesauce. Mix just until combined.
- Peel, core, and dice 2 Granny Smith apples and fold into the batter.
- Heat 1 1/2 inches of canola oil in a heavy skillet to 375 degrees. Drop 1/4 cup batter per fritter into the hot oil, spreading it out as you drop. Fry each side until golden brown, about 2 minutes per side. Remove and place on paper towel.
- Make glaze by whisking together 2 cups powdered sugar, 1/4 cup milk, and 1/2 tsp vanilla. Dunk both sides of each fritter into the glaze so the fritters are well coated. Place on wire rack to drip dry.
Recipe Notes:
- Temperature – You can use a candy thermometer to keep an eye on the oil temperature. You want to try and maintain 375 degrees, this helps to make sure the fritters are baked all the way through. If it gets too hot, they’ll get too dark on the outside and be doughy on the inside.
- Timing – You may need to fry each side longer than 2 minutes, they should be golden brown.
- Flattening the Dough – Leaving the dough in a ball makes it harder to cook all the way through. I find it’s best to spoon the dough on a plate allowing it to flatten naturally, then using an all purpose turner I scrape it off the plate and place it into the hot oil. If the dough is too round they will taste like muffins instead of donuts.
- Frying – Don’t drop too many fritters in the pan at once. You want to leave room for them to move around and it makes it easier to flip and grab them.
- Turner & Strainer -You can drop the fritters in with an all purpose turner. You can use the same tool to remove them from the hot oil, or you can use a spider strainer.
- Safety – If you are new to deep frying, please take your time and don’t rush through it. The oil is hot and it can be dangerous.
- Discarding Hot Oil – My Dad says it’s not good to dump the hot oil down the drain, he says it will solidify and plug your pipes. He recommends taking it to your local salvage yard where they can properly dispose of it.
