2-Ingredient Heart Sandwich Cookies
My son doesn’t have school on Friday, so we go to the YMCA so he can play Pickleball. He absolutely loves it! Someone he plays the game with is very competitive. I am embarrassed to say I judged him and cringed when my son played with him. But I sat back quietly because he needs to learn how to navigate differences between people.
We were on the sidelines recently and he approached my son to tell him he was wearing the wrong shoes. He was kind about it and explained why he should have different ones and then offered to give him a pair! I was shocked!
He gave us directions to his house so we stopped by later in the day to pick them up. It was one of the nicest visits we’ve ever had! It was short but sweet, and we left with two pair of shoes instead of one!
I noticed a sign that hung in his garage about the value of making mistakes. I told him that I loved the sign and that our thinking aligned. He went on to explain the importance of trying and not to care what anyone else thinks. Then he explained that if someone wants to learn how to dance, but they are too embarrassed to try, they need to get over their embarrassment and try any way because people watch the best dancers, not the worst. I wanted to say, “You’ve never seen me dance!” HA!
In the short time I spent with him, I felt so encouraged and so terrible at the same time. I really, really misjudged him. He expects people to try their hardest, so his competitiveness isn’t what I thought it was. It’s his way of pushing people to play up to their potential. I went from cringing to applauding!
