A fun, Fall themed treat that is easy to make with caramel centered Kisses for a creamy, delicious surprise!
Chocolate Acorns
If I baked every day, all day and through the night for the rest of my life I wouldn’t even make a dent in all of the recipes I want to share with you! If my social media feed wasn’t constantly filled with recipes that distract and inspire me, I would stop getting interrupted!
So, my goal is to focus on sharing some more of my all-time favorite recipes with you. These Acorn Kisses Treats are one of them!
Between my Mom and I, we have perfected the recipe including the method in which to assemble them. This same idea is already floating around out there, but we changed the Kisses to be caramel filled instead of just a chocolate Kiss. And we are sure glad we did! They are always a hit when we make them. They are so easy to eat, it’s dangerous. It’s like popping popcorn in your mouth, but better!
If that sounds tempting to you, then you won’t be able to resist these Rolo Pretzel Turtles, Candied Pecans, or these Chocolate Peanut Butter Pretzel Bites, either!
What You’ll Need:
- Hersey’s Caramel Filled Kisses
- Nutter Butter Cookie Bites
- Mini Chocolate Chips
How to Make Acorn Kisses Treats
- Unwrap a bag of Hersey’s Caramel Kisses and set aside. You should have about 60.
- Line a baking sheet with parchment paper and lay out 60 Nutter Butter Bites.
- Put a plate in the microwave for 20-30 seconds. Remove the plate and when the plate is warm, not really hot, place 10 unwrapped Kisses on the plate. Let them sit for a few seconds. Test them by lifting and checking the bottom of the first one you put on the plate. If it’s starting to melt then start placing on the Nutter Butter Bites in the same order you put them on the plate. This will make sure the Kisses are evenly melted and ready to ‘glue’ onto the cookie. Let harden.
- When ready, melt a small amount of chocolate. Place a toothpick in the melted chocolate and put a dab of melted chocolate in the center of the top of the acorn. Then put a mini-chocolate chip on top of the melted chocolate.
- Repeat until you have the desired number of acorns. Let sit until firm.
Recipe Notes & Alternative Methods:
- Nutter Butter Cookie Bites – I recommend buying 2-3 containers, which will give you more than you need. Some of the factory made sandwiches are quite a bit off centered. Acorns aren’t perfect, but the cookie bites look more like an acorn top when they are somewhat centered. So I usually buy extra, just in case.
- Where to Find the Cookies – You can’t find the Nutter Butter Cookie Bites on the shelf at the store. They come in a small, personal size cup with a lid and are usually on end caps, by the check out, or in the big round wire bins in the center of the main aisles.
- Prep Work – I like to lay out the cookie bites first. That way they are ready when the Kisses are!
- Heating the Plate – Do not use a paper plate for the heating trick. You must use ceramic or glass. You need the plate warm, not really hot. It should be safe to the touch of your hand. If the plate is too hot, it will melt the Kisses too fast on the bottoms and you’ll have a mess.
- Alternative Methods –
- You can also break the cookie bites in half, using only half of the cookie for the top of the acorn.
- There is an alternative to the plate method. Melt chocolate and dunk Kisses into the melted chocolate and ‘glue’ to the cookies. This way sounds easier, but the plate method give the acorns a cleaner look and after you master doing it that way, it goes fast!
- Alternative Kisses – You can use any Kiss you’d like for this recipe. Such as:
- Solid milk chocolate
- With Almonds
- Hot Cocoa
The Plate Trick Explained:
- Caramel Kisses are more delicate than regular chocolate Kisses, so my Mom came up with a genius idea that is tried and true! To melt the Kisses just enough to make them stick to the Nutter Butter Cookie Bites, warm a plate in the microwave for 20-30 seconds. The time depends on the kind of plate you use, so I would start at 20 seconds and see if that heats up the plate enough to melt the bottoms of the Kisses when you put them on the plate. You need the plate warm, not really hot. It should be safe to the touch of your hand. If the plate is too hot, it will melt the Kisses too fast on the bottoms and you’ll have a mess. So, do this:
- Heat a plate in the microwave for 20 seconds. Check the temperature of the plate. If it’s just right, place a handful of Kisses on the plate. (Start with about 10 or so. You don’t want too many, because they will melt faster than you can produce acorns.) If it’s too hot, let it cool for a few seconds.
- Once you place a handful of Kisses on the plate, let them sit for a few seconds. Remember the order you put them on the plate. That’s the order you’ll take them off the plate because of the melting time.
- Check to see if they are ready to ‘glue’ to the Nutter Butter Bites by turning over the first one you put on the plate. If the chocolate is slightly melted, enough to ‘glue’ to the Nutter Butter Bite, then quickly start sticking the Kisses to the cookies.
- When you stick them together, press firmly but lightly. If you press too hard the Kisses can break or too much chocolate can ooze out from the bottom.
