Bird Nest Donuts
I recently had the same conversation with two different girl friends in the same week. We were listing all of the things that are expected of us, including our own expectations, and wondered how in the world we find the endurance to get it all done.
We want the best for our families, but by wanting to accomplish ‘all of the things’ we feel like we are failing or falling short because there is just so much.
It sounded something like this – we work, take care of the house and the yard, spend enough time with the kids, prioritize our marriage, keep up on the laundry, write the thank you notes, buy the birthday presents, get groceries, run errands, follow through on church commitments, be intentional with our friendships, give our all to try and raise good people, serve our community, serve healthy meals to our family, pack lunches, get the kids to school, pick them up from school, avoid conflict, resolve conflict, make the appointments, keep the appointments, try to fit a shower in, go to bed on time, drink enough water, try to exercise… and this is the very short list of the needs we feel are important to meet.
Then, social media sets unrealistic expectations on top of that.
And, yet, I don’t ever want this season of life to end. I love the busyness that having a family brings, no matter how tired I am at the end of every day! There is always tomorrow to get done what I didn’t finish today.
I praise God every day for a flexible job that allows me to squeeze it all in and a husband who offers help. And when he doesn’t offer, he helps when I ask for it. God hears my prayer when I ask for the strength to get through each day!
Kids can help with a lot more things than people give them credit for. Don’t be fooled – they are very capable. Give them jobs to do. It’s good for them, and us!
