If you love the idea of building a gingerbread house but don’t want to deal with baking and complicated prep, this Pop-Tart Gingerbread House is the perfect shortcut! Made with toaster pastries, icing, and festive candy, it’s a fun and easy twist on a classic Christmas tradition!
Kid-Friendly Pop-Tart Gingerbread House!
I always agonize over projects like this Pop Tart Gingerbread House! I overthink decorating because it has unlimited creative freedom! There is so much Christmas candy to chose from and I can’t use all of it, so I try to narrow it down to a few traditional favorites. Then, there’s where to put it and how to make it look different from everyone else’s. That’s where my string of Christmas lights come in!
Between my son and I, we came up with some fun and easy ways to decorate this super cute house. The ideas are endless, so having a friendly decorating contest would be a great way to spend time with your family this Christmas!
Why this Recipe Works:
- No Baking Required – Using Pop-Tarts as the structure eliminates the need to bake gingerbread from scratch. This saves time and makes it perfect for last-minute holiday fun.
- Easy Customization – With simple ingredients like candy and sprinkles, you can decorate freely and personalize each house.
- Beginner Friendly – Minimal ingredients and no baking make this recipe accessible for all skill levels.
- Fun Over Perfection – This idea is designed to be playful and forgiving, so even imperfect houses turn out charming and festive.
Ingredients You’ll Need:
- 6 Strawberry Pop Tarts – These acts as the ‘walls’ and ‘roof’ of your gingerbread house, adding both structure and a sweet, fruity flavor.
- 1 tube Store Bought Decorating Icing – Holds the house together and is used for piping details like windows, doors, and roof designs.
- Christmas Candy – Adds color, texture, and festive flair (think gumdrops, sprinkles, candy canes, and more!)
How to Make a Pop Tart Gingerbread House
- Lay out a piece of parchment paper.
- Vertically place 1 Pop Tart down. Lay another one down to the left and to the right of it, lining them up on the bottom.
- Using a knife, find the center of the top of the vertically placed Pop Tart and cut down to align with each Pop Tart to the left and right of it.
- Lay the cut Pop Tart on top of the remaining Pop Tart and cut along the pointed top so they match.
- Reposition the pieces to form a house, placing the pointed Pop Tarts on the ends.
- Using decorating icing, ‘glue’ all walls together. Once set, ‘glue’ the roof on.
- Once all edges of the house have dried, begin ‘gluing’ on Christmas candy to decorate as desired.
My Best Tips:
- Use Thick, Sturdy Icing as ‘Glue’ – Use thick store-bought frosting. It should be stiff enough to hold walls up without sliding.
- Let Each Step Set – Don’t rush assembly – let the walls dry for 5-10 minutes before adding the roof. This prevents collapsing and keeps everything aligned.
- Choose Flat, Even Pop-Tarts – Pick Pop-Tarts that are not warped or cracked. Flat pieces make the structure much more stable.
- Decorate While Icing is Wet – Add candy and sprinkles right after piping icing so they sticky easily.
- Start Simple, Then Add Details – Focus on structure first, then go back and add windows, door, and decorations. This keeps the build stress-free.
- Make It Fun, Not Perfect – Pop-Tart houses are meant to be easy and kid-friendly – embrace the imperfections!
